In consultation with their advisors and sponsors, students can select a CEL-1 activity or Community Education Day session from among well-established options that encourage different kinds of learning. Check out the different listings to see what kinds of skills each type of activity enhances and what catches your attention.
Student Groups
Student groups place a special emphasis on student-driven learning about a wide range of current topics, and on collaborative work toward shared, student-identified goals. Fulfiling your Campus Engaged Learning (CEL-1) requirment through membership in a recognized student group will enable you to: learn about a particular topic in a non-course environment; practice informing yourself about current topics and events relevant to the group's focus; gain experience planning and carrying out campus events; and learn how to work with others towards a common goal.
If you can't find what you're looking for, or have any questions about student groups, contact the Office of Campus Leadership and Activities at 559-6005 or leadership@hampshire.edu.
Courses
Student may use certain courses from Outdoors Program/Recreational Athletics (OPRA), Hampshire College Lemelson Center (HCLC) or Experimental Program in Education and Community (EPEC) to satisfy CEL-1. OPRA courses expose students to the world of physical culture through a variety of experiences. The Lemelson Center offers opportunities in the areas of applied design, appropriate technology, social entrepreneurship, and art and technology. The EPEC Program offers courses taught by students, staff, faculty and Hampshire alums and promotes student-initiated work not otherwise represented within the academic structure of the college.
If you are taking a course to fulfill your Campus Engagled Learning (CEL-1) requirement, make sure your instructor knows this! You'll be asked to document your participation and some additional collaborative work and reflection may be required.
Hampshire Centers, Programs and Offices
Many Hampshire centers, programs and offices may be offering Campus Engaged Learning (CEL-1) Activities this year. Examples of centers include The Center for Feminisms, the Cultural Center, and the Center for Spiritual Life. Programs that may be offering a CEL-1 include the Dance Program, Childhood, Youth and Learning, and the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program.
Additional Options
In addition to encouraging students to engage in existing community-building and/or collaborative activities, the Campus Engaged Learning (CEL-1) Activity requirement also celebrates and encourages projects pioneered by Division II and III students, staff, and faculty themselves. CEL-1 activities in this category may respond to existing (and changing) campus needs, or be based on student, staff, or faculty interests that may not be fully addressed by traditional course offerings.
